First of all, the opening credits (that scene right after FOX Seachlight Presents frame) reminded me of a Korean film. Coupled with that illustration of a bench, Korean na Korean ang feel. Plus, it has the quietness of Korean films. Think Il Mare, The Classic or April Snow. While the narration at the beginning also reminded me of Pushing Daisies. How the story jumped from Day 1 then to Day 387 then to Day 49 reminded me of The Time Traveler's Wife.
7 Things About (500) Days of Summer:
1. Although Summer Finn (Zooey Deschanel) broke Tom Hansen's (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) heart, I just can't get to hate on her. She did warn him that she doesn't do the boyfriend thing and she never referred to him as her boyfriend. They just did stuff that couples do but in this day and age, that's not really how the world works. So if you're "special someone" tells you you don't have to put a label on what the two of you have, maybe you'd have to give it a second thought.
2. Summer is incredibly cute. I love her hair and her clothes. I wonder if one could be effortlessly cute as her. And if you noticed, her name is kind of a play on words~ Summer Finn, Finn... gets?
3. The things you do for your crush to notice you, tsk... tsk... Tom had a crush on Summer right from the moment he has set his eyes on her. I loved it how he was acting nonchalant about the fact that he and Summer are in the elevator together, alone together! But not only that, Summer tells him how she loves The Smiths and sings along. And now that he knows what the two of them have in common (aka The Smiths), he uses it to catch her attention. I especially loved the scene where he turned up the volume of his speaker just so Summer could hear it on her way out.
4. Another thing I found funny was how the things Tom used to love about Summer are now the same things she hates about her. Or maybe he hates it because he thinks of them and remembers how much he adores her...
5. It was said that this movie is not a love story but a story about love. But how can this not be a story about love? He falls in love with her, she doesn't. It is unrequited love. Unrequited, meaning not returned, but it still is about love, right? We were forewarned that they won't end up together because Summer just doesn't feel the say way about Tom but that didn't keep me from hoping that they would. But at the same time, I'm also hoping that they wouldn't.
6. It was cruel of Summer to invite Tom over to her engagement party and what's worse, he didn't even know it was her engagement party. Poor Tom, he went there excited about what's in store for him and then shit happened~ the same Summer who didn't even want to call what they had a relationship is now engaged to another man. Imagine how inadequate he could've felt at that time. Marriage is something much more permanent, a label that's harder to erase but she's willing to have that with another. Ouch.
7. I think you know it when you feel it, that's what Tom told Summer when she'll know that she's in love. What's ironic was this was the same line that Summer told her when he asked her why she married her husband.
Tom: You never wanted to be anybody's girlfriend, now you're somebody's wife.Double ouch.
Summer: It surprised me, too.
Tom: I don't think I'll ever understand that. I mean, it doesn't make sense.
Summer: It just happened.
Tom: That's what I don't understand, what just happened?
Summer: I just woke up one day and I knew.
Tom: Knew what?
Summer: What I was never sure of with you .
As what others have said, this movie is breathtakingly beautiful.
After 10 Things I Hate About You, (500)Days of Summer is the only movie of Joseph Gordon-Levitt I've seen. Used to not like the guy back then but now, now it's a different story. He kind of reminds me of a Heath Ledger sin receding hairline. I hope I would see more movies from him. OKay, back to the movie...
This movie is about destiny, fate, chuchuchuchu... and that there are plenty of fish in the sea. So here I am, much more confused than ever whether or not to believe fate and destiny and that there's a person out there for us. So yeah, whatever. I'm just glad I've watched this movie already and I want to watch it again...
