Project 100: The Social Network, Eat Pray Love

Buhayin natin ang Movie Marathon Mondays! Time management is all it takes. Naks, yabang akala mo kung sinong magaling sa time management. Anyway, today was a mix of work and some recreation therapy.

Eat Pray Love
Started watching last Friday but had to leave in the middle because I accompanied mommy to church. At least I only have an hour or so of what I thought was a dragging movie. But I always finish what I start so here it is...

First of all, I was also not that into the book. I really thought she was selfish. She wanted out of her marriage and the reason was they grew apart. They grew apart. Not a valid reason, in my honest opinion. Why not take a sabbatical from your marriage instead? Wait, is there such a thing? There should be!

Now, in comparison with the book, andaming kulang. Before I thought it's better to read the book first before you watch the movie. Dapat ata watch the movie first before you read the book. I read The Time Traveler's Wife and Eat Pray Love first and I found their movies lacking. And in the case of P.S. I Love You, I watched the movie first then read the book and appreciated the book more. Or maybe it's just really the book or the movie.

The Social Network
I've heard so much buzz about this one. A lot of raves, actually.

Three things:
  1. Mark Zuckerberg is an ass if the the movie portrayal of him is accurate. He bashes his ex-girlfriend on the internet and he betrays his best friend who helped him put up this billion-dollar enterprise. Just an observation ha, he's very typical of geeks who make it big- they want to seek revenge on that girl who rejected them or the jocks who bullied them or just anyone who they thought didn't pay attention to them. But even with all that money, he still is miserable and couldn't get Erica Albright back. That is if this story is accurate.
  2. What was Erica Albright thinking? Why does she have a Facebook account? Why!?!?! Though I think the ending was brilliant. Loved it. Imagine, 6 billion dollars yet you couldn't get that one thing you want?
  3. I really feel for the best friend. I don't really care about the Winklevoss. Eduardo deserves so much better than that betrayal. If there's anything Mark could do for his friend who helped him start up all this Facebook thing, it is to protect the interest of his friend.
Brilliant. Though it's sad that it is a true story. It really happened. Kaya nga sabi nila do not get into a business with friends if you want to keep them.

Week 5: the week that was a rollercoaster of emotions

♥ Monday ♥
Day-out with Ycel. 10:30 call-time at La Salle. As usual, I was late. Alumni card renewal. Went to MOA. Lunch at David's Tea House- lemon chicken and sweet & sour spareribs and hakaw!!! Love & Other Drugs. Merienda at Kopi Roti- soft-boiled eggs FTW. While waiting for the LRT, I was told to go to Pius Center in UN. Dinner with mommy, AD and Uncle in Max's UN Ave. I'm so stuffed I feel like a pig.

♥ Tuesday ♥
Final touches to shop repairs. While waiting for the karpintero to finish, organized stuff and magazines. When you arrange Cosmopolitan mags by date, starting with January, you'll get this <--- nakakatuwa lang. Though I am not a Comso girl. I buy it for the customers. I am actually a Glamour girl. PM: back to the kitchen for Feb's supplies inventory.

♥ Wednesday ♥
Interviewed prospect employee. I'm conflicted whether to get her or not. She's knowledgeable of most massages but after she did a trial massage on me, I didn't feel so good. I need a sign.

♥ Thursday ♥
Kong Hei Fat Choi! Divi trip, accompanied by Ate Jo. Was able to do almost everything on my list- rubber duckie, towels, fabric for seat cover, supplies, etc. Check. Check. Check. Free tikoy and calendar. Yay for freebies! Got the Philippine Star to check out my "kapalaran" for 2011. Ah basta swerte ako forever.

♥ Friday ♥
Woke up with stomachache, feeling all gassy. Stayed all day at home. First Friday mass with mommy. Massage tutorial.

♥ Saturday ♥
Woke up early on a Saturday morning for my Spanish class! Wee! El Fili course is fun. I miss this. I'm so glad I enrolled for it. Showbiz chismis over lunch with mis amigas at the Casino. The most expensive tocino meal ever. In fairness masarap naman siya pero di na ako uulit. Hitched a ride with Cheek and wife to Ortigas.

♥ Sunday ♥
Sunday lunch-out! Mong Kok lunch with Tita D. Super busog. Movie, Tita D's treat: Tangled. Coffee afterwards, mommy's treat. Sunday mass.

My card reader's busted. Boo! Must get a new one from CD-R King so I can post pixelized pictures taken by my phone camera.

Project 100: Tangled

I'm such a sucker for Disney animations. Not those CGI type but the old-school ones like in the 90s. Sure, 3D makes things more interesting with all the effects but it distracts you from the story. Kaya ayoko ng Avatar eh... outside all those kick-ass 3D effects, the story sucks. Anyway... I was excited for Tangled ever since its trailer came out. Old-school Disney animation, yay!

Watched Tangled in SLE's musty cinemas but I don't really care about that as long as there are no rats/insects scurrying on the floor. The mustiness greeted us as we entered the cinema but was gone once the movie started. Maybe because all my attention was on the movie or maybe I got immune to the smell. But who cares? The movie was great!

I already know Zachary Levi voices one of the characters but when I actually heard his voice, I was giddy! I was like, "Chuck! Chuck!" Haha. I love love love Chuck and even if his character, Flynn Rider/ Eugene Fitzherbert, is supposedly a thief, a hooligan, I know Flynn's a good person inside- cos he's the bida and with Chuck's voice, he must be a good person. Ha. Judging a person (or a fictional character) based on his voice.

The one thing about fairy tales, even if they're modern adaptations, you know they will always always have happy endings. You just can't crush little girls' idealism towards love and finding prince charming; you let them find out for themselves. But again, who cares!?!! Let us escape from the harsh realities of this life even if just for an hour and a half, ya? Hay, I have Disney to blame for my Cinderella complex that I just can't shake off. By now I should know that happily ever after don't just happen and 'prince charming' don't just come knocking on my door. At least here in Tangled, prince charming was first  "thief charming" before he became a prince. Rapunzel's just adorable. These fairy tale heroines, how old are they supposedly? I find her so cute. And her optimism puts my positivity chuva to shame. Sa sobrang haba pa lang ng buhok niya, she should be complaining about how heavy it is. But then again, it is magical so maybe it doesn't weigh a thing.

Bribery exists even in animations! What's the world coming to? Well, it was portrayed in a funny way but still that is bribery. And aside from bribery, beauty can get you anywhere. Rapunzel easily coaxed the horse to be on their side even just for one day and the same horse can be easily bribed with apples. But this is no time to get so serious...

Fun movie! And it's even more fun because we were watching with kids! Lots of them! Nakakatawa mga comments nila. I love it! And you know what else I like in this modern twist of fairy tale, Rapunzel isn't wholly dependent on the guy. She also kicks ass! Her hair kicks ass! I hope Disney makes more of this.

booktrack 2011-02: Uh-Oh: Some Observations from Both Sides of the Refrigerator Door

I just need a copy of All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten and I will have all three of Robert Fulghum's books. Thrifted It Was On Fire When I Lay Down On It a few years back and this book late last year. Booksale is love ♥

How I wish I could write essays like this man does. I blog because I like writing and not because I like writing it would mean that I actually make sense. I rarely do. Anyway, I really admire people like Mr. Fulghum and how they make interesting essays and make sense of almost anything under the sun, even if it's just about the most mundane, everyday stuff such as meatloaf.

I had fun reading this and in the tradition of book reviews, my style, here are snippets/ quotes from the book I find inspiring~

Yet love has a way of ambushing the heart and folding the best laid plans back in upon the planner... Everybody gets burned sometime. Everybody gets a turn. And to wit I don't know if I am actually lucky that I haven't gotten my turn yet.

"Maybe something will happen" is Cinderella's motto and that is one motto that shouldn't be lived out. I should remind myself to get this Cinderella syndrome off my system. I thought Cinderella syndrome has something to do with waiting for prince charming; turns out it is waiting for something, anything, to happen to you. In the fairy tale, it just happens that Cinderella's something is her prince charming. I should make it happen myself. In the words of Tim Gunn, Make it work!

Hope for better times is not enough- that one must be an active participant in the quality of the future. If I want flowers in the future the planting must be done now. Also related to doing without that darn fairy tale syndrome. Honestly, this just spoke to me. I am guilty of waiting for things to happen. Passive waiting. Always hoping for some kind of Divine Intervention- that's me! And that shouldn't be the case. Hope and faith must be active verbs. Ya hear?

Also came across the Law of Compensation or the concept that one's extremely good attributes/skills are offset by another attribute that is not so good. Meaning, an extremely good-looking woman may be dumb as a stump. God is fair after all. There is hope for me. Haha! What could be that one attribute or skill I'm extremely good at?

It was entertaining and informative reading this book. I enjoyed it so much I think I will reread It Was On Fire... soon. Next book on the list: Ambeth Ocampo's Dirty Dancing: Looking Back 2.

manila day

According to my sign, this is an auspicious year for me. I will not expect too much but I will pray that things will be in my favor. Last month was sucky but looks like things take a turn for the better. Crossing my fingers (and toes)...

Last Monday- spent the entire day in Manila Ci-tey!

Ycel and I went to the alma mater last Monday. I was expecting the environment to be different from how it was seven years ago. I was delightfully surprised that it still is the same. I'm officially missing my college days. It almost feels nostalgic to walk the halls of LS again...

If we had more time, I would've wanted to go eat in aristo, sps and cc. I wanted to visit the lib again but I don't know if we can go inside without a school ID. Can I use my alumni card instead?

MOA afterwards and lunch at David's Tea House. Yummy yummy lunch we had- sweet and sour spareribs, lemon chicken, hakaw and yang chow (that's supposedly good for 2-3 persons but was able to feed 6). Loved their Lemon Chicken, comparable to Wai Ying's. Whenever I go to a Chinese restaurant, I always order lemon chicken when available and Wai Ying's version is my benchmark of good lemon chicken.

Watched Love and Other Drugs. I liked it, Ycel didn't. I thought it was nice. Uber cheesy but nice.
Only, there's too much sex and it's only R13. If I had a 13-year-old kid, I would freak out if she watched this. It's not even PG13 for crying out loud. But then again it would so awkward to watch this with a parent. Ha.
And what happened to Mia Thermopolis? Lost innocence, tsk. It's always hard to accept the fact that people grow up and Ella Enchanted is now fornicating on screen.

Chow time again after movie- Kopi Roti! It's the first time I've set foot in Kopi Roti again ever since AB left for NY. I miss AB. She liked Kopi Roti so much and we'd always go there and I was always complaining to I've reached my saturation point for kopi buns and if I eat one more, I'd throw up. I never thought I'd miss it.

I had fun with Ycel kahit kinakawawa niya ako haha. Dear Ycel, FYI... hindi pa rin ako nakauwi agad. While waiting for the train home, sister dear called and asked me to go to Pius Center where my uncle pari is staying. We had dinner at Max's UN. I'm such a pig. I must have eaten half my weight that day.

♥♥♥

What's keeping me busy these days?

Mostly business-related stuff, worrying about life in general, where in the world do I get good nail techs, I'm in love with my National Geographic/Discovery/BBC documentaries, Korean series and my vision board. I'm really trying to change my work habit but it takes time to get out of a habit you've gotten used to.

Speaking of habits, I'm almost over one (bad) habit. Not bad as in the truest sense of the word, but bad for me. This has something to do with my Feb 15 deadline. At least if I go cold turkey on the 15th, it'd be much easier for me.

A new habit I have is Cinderella's Sister. I hope they put it in an earlier timeslot. I'm resisting the urge to buy a DVD from my suking pirata.

Will end this post with my LSS and favorite song as of late

kong hei fat choi

more like fat joy. FML.

Planned this divi trip last week, totally oblivious that it was Chinese New Year's. In fairness, it's not as crowded naman so keribels na din. Almost mission-accomplished, forgot to buy additional fabric for curtains
  • new seat cover fabric
  • towels
  • royal blue organza ribbon
  • baby blue frosted tulle
  • rubber duckies
  • galvanic spa wand
  • spa supplies
My supplier had this raffle thingy for Chinese NY- spend 3K and get a chance to win something from them. Because I was eligible, I picked the ang pao Ate Jo chose (I swear I'm such a people-pleaser) I won something from their 99-peso trash stash. There was a hair blower somewhere there and I was hoping to get that but I didn't. Boo. Yun pa naman ang kailangan ko. Anyway, I got free calendar, tikoy and 100 bucks off my next movie.

Dragon dance. Firecrackers. Free tikoy. Thankful that I serendipitously chose this day to go to divi.

week 4: nosebleed

Had visitors from New York. Went to Tagaytay to see the volcano and whathaveyous. Filipino lunch at Josephine's and merienda in Bag of Beans- yummy coffee and blueberry cheesecake. Traffic going back to Manila was bad and Joaquim was having tantrums inside the automobile. Went to Kuya B's house and had dinner. Pork sinigang, FTW! We've been eating since morning. THIS IS THE LIFE! And when I start on packing on the pounds, I'm sure I'll be hitting my head with a fork. But really, food tastes sooo good. I have no other choice than give in... Started repainting of the shop.

Day 2 of shop refurbishment. Sta. Lucia to buy additional materials but came home with nothing. AC treated me to nuggets meal, upsized to one with twister fries. Giddy!!! Was supposed to go out on dinner with cousin and friends but because of the bus bombing, they opted to stay in the hotel so we ended up just eating in the hotel bar. It was a fun night though- chitchatting over (verrrry expensive) Coke and pizza margherita.

Mostly stayed in the plaza to oversee repair work.  Trip to the hardware to buy additional materials. AD accompanied me in the Daiso store to see if there are stocks of those 88-peso wall stickers we want to put on our accent wall. Zilch. Ended up just having coffee in Starbucks SLE, which with its outdoor table set-ups, reminds me of The Hills... jejemon version. Ha.

Trip to the hardware again. They started working on the waterproofing. Called AD and asked if she can accompany me to Home Depot to look for wallpapers for our accent wall. Went first to Megamall to check if Daiso St. Francis has stock of the 88-peso wall sticker. Still none. Boo. Season 2 and 3 of Dexter. A NatGeo docu on volcanoes, atmosphere, etc. New Ambeth Ocampo book for 95 pesos ☺ AD treated me to shawarma in Uncle Moe's. Yummmmmy!

Stayed home all day-  bantay sa (supposedly) last day of repairs but they didn't finish yet with the repainting of the tables and stools so they'd have to come back on Monday. Nene and I cleaned up the shop and got it ready for Saturday.

Stayed home ALL DAY again. Started watching my documentaries and only go to finish the one on volcanoes. Merienda over My Amnesia Girl with AC and Nene.

Skill-tested a nail tech at 9 in the morning. So far, so good. Asked her to do extra work muna while I'm still interviewing more nail techs.  Lunch at Don Antonio but sans mommy and AC. Yummy lechon kawali, pancit and turbo chicken for lunch. Christmas gifts ♥
